One of the mandates of the Ortganization is to create awareness and advocacy on the rights for the persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Bhutan. Most people in the community have strong discriminatory beliefs about persons living with disabilities and the causes of their impairments. They think that disabilities are caused as a result of bad deeds in past life and they are always ignored and discriminated. There are no benefits or plans for persons with disabilities in place by the government as there is no disability act and any policies in place. Thus, educating people regarding disabilities and giving people the knowledge required to carry out a job or task thus separates good practice from poor towards PWDs in the society.
In order to bring shift in the attitudes of people towards disabilities, to promote understanding and to create a more inclusive environment for persons with disabilities in Bhutan, DPO conducts various programs starting from the grass root level of the community up to the highest level of government officials and other planning agencies by conducting various workshops and seminars in disability fields. Organization also conducts community awareness to the local leaders and health workers in the Gewog/ community level and to the parents, caregivers and to the individual as well in the community level.
